Prevent over-messaging, protect contacts in active automation workflows, and suppress specific dynamic audiences directly from campaign audience settings — no manual suppression lists required.

Senders can now exclude audiences or custom segments as well as contacts actively enrolled in workflows directly from the campaign creation flow. When setting up your campaign under Campaigns > Audience, you can apply dynamic exclusion rules in a few clicks — eliminating the need to export local suppression lists or submit custom support requests.

What's New & Key Features

  • Exclude Segment(s): Pick one or more existing audiences or custom segments to exclude from a send in a single click. For example, when running a follow-up promo campaign ("Promo 2"), you can select the audience"Users who opened Promo 1" and exclude it directly, instead of exporting it into a local suppression list first. Contacts in an excluded segment are removed even if they match the campaign's main target list or were added to the send individually.
  • Exclude Active Workflow Contacts: Exclude contacts currently enrolled in Any Workflow, or in one or more specific automated workflows. Only actively enrolled contacts are held back — once a contact completes or exits the workflow, they automatically become eligible for campaign sends again on the next run.
  • Additive Exclusion Logic (or Rule): Both audiences and workflow exclusion filters can be used on the same send. A contact matching either condition (audience match OR active workflow enrollment) is excluded from the campaign.
  • Live Send-Time Evaluation: Audience/Segment membership and workflow enrollment are evaluated live right when the campaign send is processed. Once processing begins, the audience is locked — if a contact enters a workflow after that point, they will still receive the current send, but will be automatically excluded from subsequent campaign sends if they are still mid-workflow.
  • Reporting Metrics: Excluded contacts appear in campaign reporting as a distinct Suppressed / Excluded count, separate from bounces, unsubscribes, and general unsent contacts.
  • Graceful Handling for Deleted Workflows: If a selected workflow is deleted or finishes before the campaign send begins, the send proceeds smoothly without that rule and the sender is notified.
💡 Audience Targeting Tip: Exclusion rules are configured under Campaigns when selecting your Audiences. You can combine both audience and workflow exclusions to ensure contacts mid-onboarding or in support flows never receive general promotional blasts.

How to Set Up Exclusions in Campaign Setup

  1. Navigate to Campaigns: Log in to your tinyEmail account and go to Campaigns in the main menu. Create a new campaign or open an existing draft.
  2. Select Your Primary Audience: In the Campaign Setup flow, navigate to the Audience step and choose your primary target list or segment intended to receive the broadcast.
  3. Configure Exclusions: In the Exclusions tab, select one or more audiences or custom segments you wish to suppress from receiving this campaign.
  4. Configure Exclude Workflows: In the Exclude Workflows section, select "Any Active Workflow" or pick specific automated workflows to hold back currently enrolled contacts.
  5. Review & Send: Proceed to the review step and launch or schedule your campaign. Your selected exclusion rules will automatically be calculated and applied at send time.
